Ballinger Technology has recently introduced an LED based speed sign for use within cars looking out through the rear windscreen or alternatively mounted outside  the vehicle.

The sign produces a speed readout from a number of sources these being:

· Inbuilt speedometer.

· External speed radar.

· External speedometer.

For systems requiring two displays, one front and one rear facing two signs can be connected together by a serial link with one nominated as a master and the second as a slave. The master is used to control the system with the slave acting as a dumb display. Both signs  have the ability to function stand alone if not used in this manner. A second serial port is available to interface radar etc.

The LED Speed Sign is suited to photography by standard cameras and some infrared cameras. Unlike other LED based signs the LED Speed Sign is not multiplexed meaning that when illuminated the character is switched on all the time, rather than on and off which is the norm. This means that when photographed each digit of the sign can be seen. In other LED based signs each character is turned on and off in sequence and when photographed, digits may not be illuminated.

To allow for the sign to be mounted behind sloping windscreens superbright LEDs are used. These high rated LEDs are visible through reflections on the windscreen and in broad daylight. A dim setting is incorporated to allow for dimming at night.

Calibration of the inbuilt speedometer can be carried out by either driving over a measured 500 metre course or alternatively on a DYNO. The inbuilt speedometer uses the same circuitry and software as the Speed Detection Speedo. When calibrated on a Nata Certified Dyno it is traceable to Australian standards.

Specifications:

· 3 X 7 Segment displays.

· Visible to some infrared camera systems.

· LED Type: 5mm Superbright 10000 MC @ 20 MA

· Displays are not multiplexed.

· 2 brightness levels for use in daylight and at night, or in dimly lit areas.

· Inbuilt speedometer with a 0.5 second update rate.

· Calibration over either a 500 metre distance or on a Dyno.

· For applications requiring 2 signs one can be nominated as a master and connected to the second nominated as a slave using a serial link.

· A single DB9 connector is fitted to the sign to allow for the interfacing of radar etc.

· Power supply: 12V DC.

· Enclosure: 275 X 175 X 69mm.

· Lens: Transparent red UV stable filter made of perspex.
